I tend to agree with you but I feel that at least an introduction to some kind of shop class should be made at the junior high level and the high school classes should be for those with interest in them. I have met a ton of very skilled technical people ( Computer Science) that have no idea how to use a simple tools to make basic home repairs. Even if they don't teach you home repairs in shop at least you are introduced to the fact that you can do things in that area for yourself.

I never had to take shop in high school and I don't remember how I got out if it. I wonder if it was the electronics class I took?

Re: Geoffrey Pullum Imposes Death Penalty for Leaving Lame Blog Comments

OH way to bring back old memories that I have blocked out.... What's going on?

Re: Django Hacking Postmortem

This a great explanation of a simple problem that probably bugs other django newbies. Thanks so much for the hint of using through tables, a concept I had not come across before! In the end is kind of like your approach of do your own thing and create your own relation table, but adding the django bit of many to many. So cool stuff!

Re: And Then Some Stuff Happened

Congratulations.... Sounds like a lot of work.

Re: Web UI Tools Roundup

Actually, as I mentioned in my session at CodeCamp, I put all the files and more up on my blog for download:

http://blogs.vertigo.com/pe...

Re: Fun With CSS Class Names

That is funny. Sometimes I am really tempted to do things like this when I code, but there are a few more pairs of eyes on our code and you never know.... maybe I should still try it.

Re: Auto-generated Documentation is a Cop-out

I agree that there is absolutely no substitute for well written documentation with examples in it. I spend a lot of time on the java website in their tutorials section. On the other hand I find javadocs to be quite useful. If the programmer responsible for leaving the comment knows how to leave a well constructed comment, javadocs can be very helpful, in fact I often leave examples and long descriptions in my javadocs. The failure is not with the javadocs themselves but with those who don't know how to properly use the tool or are too lazy to do so correctly.

Re: Web UI Tools Roundup

I was going to tell you about jQuery and then I finished reading your post. I have only just barely scratched the surface with it for one of our projects, but it was really effective. I liked breadth of what it can accomplish. Firebug is also a really good tool.

Re: Rotation School Lesson 1: Order Matters

If there ever was any doubt, which I believe there wasn't, you just achieved king NERD status for that post! I still love you though. Although I find the syntax for LSL quite interesting.

Re: Rotation School Lesson 1: Order Matters

Awesome job, thank you for doing this. One to point out though that there is an extra semicolon (;) in script one which makes it not compile, guess most would notice it but a complete newbie doing this wouldn't, which I am almost new when it comes to scripting. I think the example was excellent and I am sure down the road as I get better and try more and more scripting commands this will help a lot.
